Yes, court marriage can be done in one day in India when marriage is performed under Personal law and then it is registered. If both parties have obtained a marriage certificate from an Arya Samaj temple, the same certificate can be registered under section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 by the Government Appointed Registrar of Marriage on the same working day without giving any notice to the parents of the parties. 

This process usually takes 4 to 5 hours. However, under the Special Marriage Act, a notice of 30 days is required to be given to the marriage registrar before the marriage can take place. Therefore, in the case of marriage under the Special Marriage Act, it cannot be done in one day as the notice period has to be completed.


Can Court Marriage Be Done In One Day In India?

How Hindus / Muslims/ Christians can perform marriage in one day? (Same day marriage)


There are various religious customs and practices that marrying parties follow, but when opting for a court marriage, certain laws and regulations must be adhered to according to their respective religion.

For Hindus

Same-day marriage and registration can be conducted under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 if both parties are Hindus, including Sikhs, Parsi, and Jain.

Court marriage can be done in just two steps in one day. To initiate the process, you need to have a marriage certificate issued by a ritualistic place. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, the marriage can be registered in Court with the aid of that certificate.

Arya Samaj Marriage – If you want to get married in an Arya Samaj Mandir, it takes around 2-3 hours to get a court marriage certificate. 

The registration of marriage in Court can be done the same day with the aid of a verified Arya Samaj Marriage certificate.

For Muslims 

Same-day marriage and registration is conducted under the Muslim Marriage Act, 1939, if both parties belong to the Muslim religion. 

In Muslim law, it is called as Nikah. Kazi solemnizes the Nikah and issues the Nikah nama (Marriage Certificate).

As per the Muslim marriage Act, the marriage of Muslim partners can be registered on the same day.

For Christians

Same-day marriage and registration is conducted under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, if both parties belong to the Christian religion. 

The marriage is performed in the Church and the priest issues a marriage certificate after the solemnization of the marriage.  

Under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, the marriage of Christian partners can be registered on the same day. 


What are the legal requirements to conduct marriage in one day?


To conduct court marriage in one day there are some legal requirements that must be fulfilled. The legal requirements are discussed below:

  • None of the parties should be minor. The groom should be at least 21 years old and the bride should be at least 18 years old.
  • The parties should not be in a prohibited relationship with each other, unless it is allowed by their customs.
  • None of the party should have any living spouse.
  • Two witnesses should be there. 

What documents are required to conduct marriage in one day?


Necessary documents required for court marriage are: 

  • Proof of marital status
  • Residence proof of both parties
  • Age proof of both parties
