The labour and employment laws in India regulate the relationship between employers and employees, ensure fair practices, protect rights and foster a harmonious work ambience. The labour laws in India can be categorised based on working conditions, industrial relations, wages, welfare and social securities. The labour laws are based on the Constitution of India and the International Labour Organization Convention’s resolutions.

The Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 lays down the provisions to resolve disputes between employers and employees relating to layoffs, lockouts, retrenchment etc. The Minimum Wages Act, 1948 prescribes minimum wages for various categories of employment. The Factories Act, 1948 regulates the working conditions in factories and covers aspects including health, safety, welfare and working hours of factory workers. To curb the evil of workplace harassment, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 came into force. As per the provision of this Act, employers must create a safe environment. The Maternity Benefits Act, 1961 lays down the provisions for providing maternity leave, medical benefits and other facilities to pregnant employees.
