Constitution Of India

This is the category page of the Constitution of India in India. The Constitution of India is the bulkiest written Constitution in the world. After the Independence, to keep a diverse population in India connected, there was a need for a Constitution on which the entire country had faith and that same document was the Constitution of India. The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the country. It was adopted on January 26, 1950. It is a fundamental legal documental that lays down the provisions to govern the political, social and economic framework of India. The Constituent Assembly drafted it and it is a testament to India’s commitment to democracy, justice and equality.

The objectives and ideals of the Indian Constitution are laid down in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution which emphasises justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. The 42nd Amendment made some modifications to the Preamble. The Constitution of India has the features of both the federal government and the unitary form of government such as division of power, supremacy of the constitution, bicameralism, single citizenship, integrated judiciary, emergency provisions and many others.

The Constitution of India ensures Fundamental Rights for all Indian citizens which include the right to equality, freedom of speech and expression, freedom of religion and the right to constitutional remedies. The Constitution also incorporates Directive Principles of State Policy which lays down provisions to guide the Government to work towards achieving social and economic justice, which acts as a moral compass for policymaking. India follows a parliamentary system of government. The Constitution delineates the powers and functions of the executive, legislative and judicial branches which ensure a system of checks and balances.
